The Day I Realised I Could Not be a Poet
I met my friend Paul, as usual, at the bottom of his road, ready to go to band practice. We had been reading a lot of Leonard Cohen's poetry at the time. I said "I think I'd like to be a poet but I don't see poetry in anything" Paul Replied "Then you will never be a poet".
Recently I read that John Cage owned no records and much preferred to sit and listen to the sounds coming through the window of his New York apartment "Just like John Cage!" I thought
I've recently moved into a new house on a main road. I have become obsessed by the sound that cars make when they rush past my window. I've even made some stereo field recordings.
Today I was sitting in the park thinking about nothing in particular when I realised that two hedge cutters were making a strange and beautiful harmony.
I thought, "John Cage was right! I've begun to hear music in everything!" Maybe that means I could be a musician instead of a poet.
