Fretless Guitar
A quite conventional modification, I suppose, it's probably been done before. I used to enjoy playing on a friend's fretless bass, which he hade made up by a guitar shop - taking out the frets and sanding down the fretboard. I've done similar on this old beat up classic guitar. As well as allowing slurs and out of tune playing, the lack of frets cuts the decay of the stings very short.
